Microsoft Takes Legal Action Against Canada-Based Info-Stealing Malware Lumma Stealer

()- Microsoft announced on Wednesday that their Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) took legal action against Lumma Stealer recently. They discovered approximately 400,000 Windows PCs worldwide were affected by this data-harvesting malware over the past couple of months.

Lumma has the ability to steal information from multiple browsers and apps, including cryptocurrency wallets, and can also install additional malicious software, according to a blog post by the firm.

Microsoft's DCU contributed to the "disruption, shutdown, and blockade of malicious domains that were central to Lumma's operations," as stated in the blog post. This action was executed following a court order issued by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that they have taken control of five web addresses utilized by hackers for operating the LummaC2 information theft malware service. The investigation into this matter is being conducted by the FBI’s office in Dallas.

Microsoft highlighted in an additional blog post about the malware that "the development and toughness of Lumma Stealer reflect larger changes within cybercrime and emphasize the necessity for multi-layered protections and collaborative efforts across industries to combat these dangers."
